Vehicle Diagnostic Check

A warning light on your dashboard can be a worry. With a diagnostics check the issue can be quickly identified and stop a huge expense later down the line.

As technology becomes more advanced unfortunately that means that there are potentially more issues that could occur with your vehicle. A diagnostics check can reveal issues with the engine, brakes, exhauxt system and many more larger components and also performance issues e.g. air flow throttle etc. it can even check various sensors throughout the vehicle.

What is a diagnostics check?

Most modern vehicles today contain an on-board computer known as an Engine Control Unit (ECU) which continually monitors the performance of the vehicle. Sensors all around the vehicle report back to the ECU if there are problems such as low fluid levels or increased engine temperature. When an issue is identified the ECU generates an error code. The relevant dashboard warning lights will then be displayed.

There are hundreds of potential error codes that can only be read by specialist vehicle diagnostic equipment. While a warning light may display on the dashboard alerting you to an issue, a diagnostics check is required to understand the full extent and cause of the problem.

When should you get a Diagnostics Check

Warning Light

There are many reasons why the check engine light appears on your vehicles dashboard and it could be something trival like not tightening the petrol cap enough, however it could also be a much serious issue. A diagnostics check will help to pin point the root of problem before it becomes too costly.

Something is not quite right

You know your vehicle so if you are driving and notice something out of ordinary e.g. a smell or unusual noise even if the warning light isn’t on then a diagnostics check would be the best place to start.

Every Year

Along with the general maintenance of a car like tyres and ensuring the fluids are topped up it’s a good idea to have a diagnostics check once a year, this will help to uncover any minor issues that you might not be aware of and will save you money in the long run.

Before purchasing a used car

When you purchase a car from a previous owner you’ll hopefully have the service log provided but it’s recommended that before you purchase that a diagnostics check is carried out, giving you peace of mind that there are no underlying issues with the vehicle.
